The world is full of famous rivalries: Coke vs. Pepsi, Conan vs. NBC, Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier, and the Sperm Whale vs. the Giant Squid—just to name a few.
This year, the storied rivalry Army-Navy football game that pits the U.S. Military Academy against the U.S. Naval Academy will be played on December 13th. Both teams will travel to M&T Bank Stadium, in Baltimore, Maryland, to square off.
The first of these long-running rivalry games was played on November 14, 1890—that’s nearly 230 years ago! And the 2025 Army-Navy Game will be the 126th meeting between the two schools.
Needless to say, the Army-Navy Game is full of traditions. Here are just a few…
1. The March On. Prior to kickoff, the entire student bodies of both Academies marches onto the field.
2. Honoring the Fallen. At the conclusion of every game—no matter the outcome—the football players sing both alma maters’ songs. The winner joins the losing team and faces the losing team’s fans. Then the two groups do the same for the winning team. Obviously, the goal is to sing second! This simple act of honoring the opposing team is one of respect, while demonstrating that the players and their respective schools are all on the same side.
The Army-Navy Game is a tribute to Americanism at its best… two academies, two rival teams, though one people and one country.
